Building a custom home sounds extremely appealing but can be very overwhelming. What are some ways to make sure your experience with a Houston custom builder goes as smoothly as possible? Keep reading to find out.
1. Have Plenty of Ideas
A Houston custom builder’s job is to follow your lead. Their job is to listen to your ideas and dreams and help turn them into a reality. On the flip side, their job is not to constantly give you ideas for your custom home. That’s not to say that we aren’t happy to give you our opinion on details of your custom home, but we want your custom home to be as unique as you are.
In order for that to happen, make sure you come into the custom home building process with plenty of ideas and visions of what you want your home to look like. Look online and through magazines for inspiration of what you do and do not want in your custom home.
2. Plan for Delays
No matter when the initial deadline is set, the odds are that your custom home will take longer than initially planned. Here at Picklo Homes we do our absolute best to stick to deadlines. However, it is very common for unexpected obstacles to pop up in the middle of construction. So, just in case the deadline can’t be met, make sure you have a contingency plan in place for a few weeks after the deadline.
3. Don’t Drown in Details
Needless to say, there are an incredible amount of details when a Houston custom builder is building your custom home. It is extremely easy to get lost in the details and become overwhelmed by the entire process. However, a great way to prevent this from happening is to use a binder to organize all the details by room, step by step. Share the organizational binder with your Houston custom builder to ensure efficient communication about the nitty gritty details throughout the custom building process.
4. Know When to Splurge and When to Cut Back
There are things worth spending extra money on when building a custom home. There are also things worth cutting back on during the custom home building experience. Do you want the newest state-of-the-art kitchen appliances? That’s fine. But try to find somewhere to cut back to offset the increase in spending. So, for example, maybe you can go without the walk-in closet that you wanted.
If you’re not willing to balance your splurging by cutting back in some areas you will undoubtedly find yourself way over budget when all is said and done.
To ensure the smoothest and most rewarding custom home building experience as possible, look no further than the Houston custom builders at Picklo Homes. Give us a call today to schedule your consultation.
My wife and I have been thinking about renovating our home but we aren’t sure where to start. I like that you suggest not giving the house an overwhelming amount of detail. Less is more sometimes so we’ll be sure to keep some rooms nice and simple. Thanks for the tips!
I like your tip to know when to splurge and when to cut back. Like you mentioned, by not cutting back, you may end up over budget. I think a good rule is to spend more money in the rooms where you’ll be spending the most time.
I like that you recommend considering when it’s appropriate to splurge and when you might want to settle for things. It makes sense that considering where you’ll spend a lot of time can be very helpful when building a custom home. Splurging on the kitchen can be very satisfactory if you do a lot of home cooking and spend time there but might not be necessary if you don’t cook a lot and wouldn’t use the fanciest appliances all that often. Thanks for the post; these could be very helpful tips to remember for when I have a home built because I’d like to have fancy bathrooms but don’t think the nicest kitchen on the market is necessary.
It’s good to know that you would need to plan for delays. Knowing that a date is an estimate, rather than a guarantee is really helpful for planning. The next time I buy a house, I would definitely want it to be custom built, and I can’t help but to plan for the future. I’ll definitely have to keep these things in mind when I get to that point.
I really like your point about knowing when to splurge and when to cut back when it comes to building a home. This is great advice as my husband and I are currently thinking about getting into our first home. To help us know what is best to splurge on, I think it’s best to evaluate what exactly is necessary for us to have and then make sure that those things get priority when it comes to our budget.
